The First Letter to Timothy
The First Letter to Timothy belongs to the pastoral epistles and provides essential guidance for the organization and the leadership of the local community of believers. Paul writes to his young assistant and encourages him to guard the deposit of faith and to stand firm against false teachings. We find instructions on the qualifications for overseers and deacons and the proper conduct of various groups within the Church. This letter emphasizes that the purpose of the law is to guide us toward a love that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience.
The text highlights the importance of prayer for all people and the recognition of Jesus as the one mediator between God and humanity. We are encouraged to seek godliness with contentment and to avoid the love of money which is a root of many kinds of evil. Paul stresses the need for the leaders of the community to be models of speech and conduct and faith and purity. The First Letter to Timothy invites us to fight the good fight of the faith and to lay hold of the eternal life to which we were called.
