The Book of the Prophet Haggai
The Book of Haggai addresses the Jewish returnees in Jerusalem and challenges them to prioritize the rebuilding of the Temple over their own personal comfort. Haggai points out that their lack of spiritual focus has led to a lack of blessing in their daily lives and their harvests. We see how the physical Temple served as a symbol of the spiritual center that should exist in every human heart. This book teaches us that we find our true fulfillment when we put the things of God before our own desires.
The message encourages the leaders and the people to take heart and work because the Spirit of the Lord remains among them as He did at the Exodus. We are promised that the future glory of this new house will be greater than the glory of the first one built by Solomon. This prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ who is the true Temple of the presence of God. The Book of Haggai invites us to be diligent in building up the Church and to trust that the Lord will fill our efforts with His peace.
