The Book of the Prophet Joel
The Book of Joel calls the community to a profound national repentance following a devastating plague of locusts that served as a sign of divine judgment. Joel uses this physical disaster to point toward the coming Day of the Lord which will be a time of both reckoning and salvation. Every believer is invited to rend their hearts and not their garments as they turn back to the Almighty. This book emphasizes that true change must begin in the depths of the soul and outward to the entire community.
The prophet provides a magnificent promise that the Lord will eventually pour out His Spirit upon all flesh. This prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment on the day of Pentecost and the birth of the Catholic Church. We see the assurance that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved from destruction. The Book of Joel encourages us to live with an awareness of the presence of God and to trust in His power to restore what has been lost.
