The Holy Gospel according to Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew presents the life and teachings of Jesus Christ with a particular focus on His identity as the long awaited Messiah of the Jewish people. It begins with a genealogy that connects Jesus to Abraham and David and highlights His role as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises. We see the famous Sermon on the Mount which provides a radical new law of love and a blueprint for the life of every disciple. This Gospel emphasizes that Jesus has come not to abolish the Law but to bring it to its perfect completion.
The narrative also contains significant instructions on the nature and mission of the Church as the new community of believers. We witness the authority of Christ over all creation and His victory over sin and death through His glorious resurrection. This book concludes with the Great Commission that sends the apostles into all the world to baptize and to teach in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew invites us to recognize Jesus as the true King who remains with us always until the end of the age.
