The Book of the Prophet Daniel
Daniel combines stories of heroic faithfulness in the face of persecution with apocalyptic visions of the final triumph of God's kingdom. We see the young men in the fiery furnace and Daniel in the lions' den as models of unshakable trust in the protection of the Almighty. These accounts encourage us to remain true to our Catholic identity even when living in a culture that is indifferent or hostile to the Gospel. Daniel reveals that the Lord is the true King of kings who rules over all human empires.
The visions of Daniel provide important background for understanding the New Testament and the second coming of Christ. We find the famous prophecy of the Son of Man who is given an everlasting dominion that will never be destroyed. The Catholic version of the book includes the beautiful Prayer of Azariah and the story of Susanna which highlight the values of justice and purity. Daniel teaches us that while the powers of this world may rage, the final victory belongs to God and His holy ones.
