The Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Isaiah is one of the most significant books of the Old Testament for Catholic readers because of its many prophecies about the coming Messiah. It combines powerful calls for social justice and repentance with magnificent visions of the future glory of God's kingdom. We find the famous descriptions of the Suffering Servant that the Church identifies with the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Isaiah reveals the holiness of the Lord and His desire to redeem all nations through His word.
The message of Isaiah is one of both judgment and consolation as it addresses the failures of the people and the promise of their restoration. We are invited to trust in the sovereign power of the Lord who is moving history toward its final and perfect goal. The imagery of the new heaven and the new earth inspires us to live with a hope that transcends our present difficulties. Isaiah teaches us that the Light of the World has come to scatter the darkness and to bring peace to all who seek Him.
