The Book of Sirach
The Book of Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus, is a comprehensive guide to moral and religious life that covers almost every aspect of human conduct. It provides wisdom on friendship, family life, financial responsibility, and the proper way to approach the Lord in prayer. We learn that all wisdom comes from the Almighty and is found in the keeping of His holy commandments. Sirach has long been used in the Church for the instruction of catechumens and the formation of the faithful.
The text concludes with a magnificent praise of famous men who served the Lord throughout the history of Israel. It reminds us of the legacy of faith that we have inherited and the importance of passing it on to future generations. We are encouraged to be diligent in our search for truth and to find our strength in the tradition of the community. Sirach teaches us that a life of virtue is the only way to find true happiness and a lasting place in the memory of the Lord.
