The Book of the Prophet Nahum
The Book of Nahum delivers a powerful oracle against Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, announcing its coming destruction. Unlike Jonah, who preached mercy, Nahum speaks of the certain judgment that falls upon a nation that persists in cruelty and oppression. We see a vivid description of the fall of a city that once seemed invincible but is now brought low by the justice of God. This narrative reminds us that no power on earth can stand against the ultimate sovereignty of the Creator.
The prophet also provides comfort to the people of Judah by assuring them that their enemy will no longer trouble them. We see that the Lord is a stronghold in the day of trouble for those who trust in Him, even as He executes vengeance on His adversaries. This contrast between divine protection and divine wrath is a central theme of the prophecy. The Book of Nahum reminds us that while God is slow to anger, His justice is perfect and His word is unfailing.
